BUCS LOSE NAILBITER TO COBOURG
Saturday July 18 saw the Buccaneers RFC 1st XV host the Cobourg Saxons RFC 1st XV at Fletcher's Field. The Bucs were missing some of their regular starters, however Cobourg was also fielding a team of veterans mixed with some of their younger up-and-comers. It was a back and forth match, but with 20 minutes left, and the Saxons leading 24 – 14, the Bucs took advantage of a sin binned Saxon and scored 2 tries to take the lead 26 – 24. In the final 10 minutes, Cobourg would take the lead and add to it with two penalty kicks. The game would come down to the last minute of play, as the Toronto squad was 5 metres out from the Cobourg end zone with ball in hand, but would run out of bounds, and out of time to end the game.
The Bucs did come away with 2 valuable points in the standings, and must now sweep their last four games for a chance to take 2nd place and play in the championship final.
TRY SCORERS: Tony Currie, Aaron Barber, Gideon Haasbroek, and Jared Cox
CONVERSIONS: James Phillips (3)
MAN OF THE MATCH: The Buccaneers played extremely well as a team, making a quick turn-around to put last week's poor performance against North Simcoe behind them. A few standouts on the day were – Carey Hollinger, making his debut at no. 12, Jared Cox who has cemented his starting role as a premier winger in the division, Tony Currie, the Bucs tighthead who is a rock in the scrum and an intimidating ball runner, and Gideon Haasbroek, the Bucs openside flanker who is a top tackle maker and tackle breaker. However, the standout performance of the day must go to the Bucs incumbent fullback, Aaron 'Shaky' Barber. Barber is easily one of the fastest men on the pitch, and is electric with ball in hand. While being a threat to score from anywhere on the pitch, Barber remains a steadfast tackler and relishes his role as last man of defence. Aaron Barber, Gideon Haasbroek and Tony Currie must all be considered front runners for this year's MVP honours.
