THE BUCCS WIN, THE BUCCS WIN!
It has been a long hard hot summer for the Buccs, being the first season in which they have fielded two sides. At times the Buccs have struggled with numbers, sometimes playing two games with as little as 23 players, and as a result the Buccs have failed to record a victory in league play this year. Now entering the TRU C playoff that has been remedied.
The Buccs fielded a single side to record their first victory this past Saturday versus Beaches 4, and it was a home game to boot. The Buccs have struggled with a new style of play envisioned by coach Jimmy Philips this year, reverting back to their old style of play when things got tough leading to confusion on the field. This was not the case on Saturday with the Buccs executing the game plan with only several minor hiccups.
The Buccs started the game with a very strong line up and the best pack that they had fielded all year, which lead to early domination and much of the game being played inside Beaches 22 in the first half. The Buccs failed to record an early try being held up beyond the try line several time by a stalwart Beaches defense. The Buccs did not falter however and stuck to their game plan and finally took the lead thanks to Gideon Hassbrroke who had 2 tries in the match.
The beaches did not give up and continued to lay a tough game bolstered by some second half substitutes from their 3rd team who were now available to play. The Beaches managed a few well earned tries but in the end did not deter the Buccs who continued to play excellent defense rarely allowing the Beaches to develop momentum. With sound defense, and smart offensive running exposing the Beaches weaknesses, the Buccs eventually gained their first victory by a margin of 26 – 12. Man of the match honours went to Gideon Hassbrooke, playing exceptionally well in the open and making big tackles when it mattered most.
The Buccs now look forward to a finals showdown vs. Bay Street having won their next game vs. Markham via default. With a winning attitude the Buccs are eager for the challenge.
