BUCCS WIN IN COLLINGWOOD

With only a first team match to play the Buccaneers squad hit the road on Saturday to travel up to Collingwood and play the new to the division Georgian Bay Titans.

After beginning the day watching the first ever Buccaneers U16 Junior side trounce Brampton, spirits were high to keep the momentum going and pull off a senior win to round out the day.

Under very hot conditions the Buccs side took the pitch against a reduced Georgian Bay side. Having only 13 players, the Titans were at a deficit from the start, and remained that way for the rest of the match.

Despite a few overlap opportunities, the Buccs stuck to the game plan determined ahead of time and kept the ball in the forwards for the first 20 minutes, managing to keep possession and make some hard fought yards, while wearing down the Titan forwards in the process. Some key passes out to the backs and some great lines led the Buccs to three tries before the half, while the Titans managed to punch in one of their own.

The second half saw the Buccs stumble a bit, with a renewed effort from the Titan back line causing a quick succession of tries to bring the score within one unconverted try. Not willing to let the efforts of the first half go unrewarded however, the Buccs pulled together and managed to take back the ball and offense. The boys punched home a number of tries thanks again to strong efforts in the forwards with ball retention, followed by key lines in the backs when the ball was made available. Full credit goes to the Titan squad for playing an entire game with 13 men, never giving up and keeping it such a competitive match. Final score Titans 29, Buccs 41.

After the game the teams got a chance to mingle back at the pub in Collingwood and announce their man of the matches. Honours of the day for the Buccs went to Jared ‘Dragon’ Cox for his three try match and strong running lines. Special mention goes to Duane Farrell and Joey Neglia in the backs for their solid efforts, and to Fraser Cook and Andy Gourley in the forwards for their dominant game up front. Thanks also to Duane for the great hospitality back at his place following the game!

The Buccs look forward to our next match on Saturday, home and actually at Sunnybrook field against the North Halton Highlanders. We have both a first and second team game scheduled so make sure you confirm your availability as soon as possible and make it out to practice on Tuesday and Thursday. Let’s keep the momentum going!

Stay classy Buccaneers.
