Buccs Lose Close Match in Streetsville

The Buccs headed to Streetesville to play the Mississauga Blues with high hopes for their first win of the season. They once again had a good turn out for both sides and took the pitch with confidence.

Buccs 2 played a very solid game against Blues 2 but failed to take advantage in the 1st half in which they pinned the Blues to their end of the field. The 2nd half saw things open up a little bit with the Blues taking advantage. Buccs 2 stayed in the game and made it a competitive match that was fun to watch even though they had lost several starters to injury, including rookie fly half Steve Schlender and veteran rookie Scott Bruce. At the final whistle Buccs 2 came out on the losing side by a margin of 20 – 10. Man of the match went to perennial rookie Tim (TimBit) Mortin who scored both trys playing 8 man for only the second time.

Buccs 1 looked across the pitch to find a much younger but smaller opponent looking back at them. Unfortunately Buccs 1 stumbled in the early part of the game and gave up 4 quick trys before settling down into their game. By the end of the 1st half Buccs 1 had stemmed the bleeding and had made it a tight match. Buccs 1 entered the 2nd half with a completely different attitude and started to dominate Blues 1, especially in the pack where Buccs 1 dominated the scrum yet again, stealing the ball more often than not. Along with the excellent scrummaging, Buccs 1 played very well in the open moving the ball between forwards and back and keeping the play alive. Brian Crothers, playing inside center, had the first try for Buccs 1 in a half which saw Buccs 1 outscore their opponents by a margin of 20 – 8. Unfortunately Buccs 1 could not come back from the early lead they had given up and ended the match with a 35 – 20 loss. Buccs 1 played perhaps their best game of the year even though they were without their captain Paul “Colsey” Collins who is still on a ban after a red card in the previous weeks match. Man of the match honours went to Tony Currie, the longest standing member of the Buccs, who was dominant in the front row along with Richie Williams.

Next week sees the Buccs travel to Bellville to take on the league leading Bulldogs for their final regular season game of the year. There is a bus going up with the team which is open to players and supporters. If you would like to make the trip please let Tim Bit know.

On Ya boys.
