BUCCS PINK LADIES DAY A HUGE SUCCESS
Under beautiful sunny skies the Buccaneers and YeoLions hosted their 3rd annual charity fundraiser for Breast Cancer. Donning the now iconic single pick rugby sock the YeoLions took to Sunnybrook field at noon with the first of their two games while the Buccs were soon called to attend to their own business for a game at 1:30pm. With the scheduled second team game against York Yeoman 2 not possible, the Buccs 2 were happy to find an alternate challenge in Bay Street 2.
The game kicked off with Bay Street scoring quickly and the Buccs 2 soon found themselves down by three scores. Not to be outdone however, some solid play in the later first half saw the Buccs begin turning the tide back scroing two scores of their own. The second half proved to be all Buccs, dominating in the rucks and ball possession and making excellent use of the back line. Bay Street’s lead quickly evaporated and by the final whistle the Buccs 2 team found themselves the victors winning 34-27.
The first team took the field against Brock RFC in their second meeting of the season. Eager to bounce back from their last loss to Brock the Buccs first team quickly settled into what would become a grueling hot grudge match. After a quick score from Brock the Buccs bounced right back and scored one of their own. Tensions mounted and the first half saw two red cards shown, one for each club. Things settled down in the second but some strong rucking by Brock allowed them a few opportunities which they managed to capitalize on. Despite the determined efforts by the Buccs first team the final score was Brock 26, Buccs 13.
With the games done it was time to head back to our sponsor bar, the Fox and Fiddle Leaside for some festivities and fundraising followed by the raffle. With so much effort going into the day to single out any one volunteer is sure to forget others so suffice it to say a huge thank you to all who took part. From the organizers of the event, to the generous donations folks procured for the raffle, to the wonderful raffle ticket selling zealots to the huge amount of supporters who came out and took part, our many thanks and appreciation go out to all. It was a fantastic day all around and while the final tally is still being sorted we are happy to have raised somewhere in the neighbourhood of $1500 for Rethink Breast Cancer http://rethinkbreastcancer.com
Next up for the Buccs is a sole game against the York Yeomen next Saturday at Fletchers Fields. With our first team still looking for its elusive first win let’s all make a big effort to get to practice and prepare properly for the games ahead.
Stay classy Buccs.
