BUCCS START 2012 SEASON WITH WIN!
The Toronto Buccaneers headed west to start their 2012 season, kicking off against the North Halton Highlanders in Georgetown on Saturday.
Despite having less than idela numbers, the Buccs still managed to field two sides, although the result was a shortcoming for the Buccs 2 match.
Starting the game with 14 players, and eventually going down to 13 due to injury, the Buccs 2 still managed to put in a great effort. With Halton scoring a few early, the Buccs 2 crawled back and came on strong for the second half with strong tackling and support. Some new faces for the Buccs proved invaluable to the game, and despite a lack of previous playing time together as a team, the Buccs 2 managed to put in a solid team effort and was almost rewarded with a victory. The upset win was almost completed despite short numbers, but final score remained Halton 27, Buccs 22.
Try scorers were: Xavier Mahdavian, Morrow Oxley, Ryan Abraham and Joey Neglia.
Inspired by the gritty game the Buccs 2 played, the Buccs 1 took the field and immediately made their presence know. With a strong back line Buccs 1 managed to run in three tries in the first half while shutting out the Highlanders leaving the score 17-0 at the half. Not giving up, North Halton pressed back in the second half running in two tries of their own to bring the game within a penalty kick in the late second half. Buccs 1 held strong however, and managed to stave off the attacking Highlanders to get the win. Final score Halton 14, Buccs 17.
Try scorers were: Gideon Haasbroek, Matt Bulloch and Aaron ‘Shakey’ Barber.
Congrats to all players on a fantastic day of rugby and for helping to get the club off to a great start for the 2012 season. The Buccs look forward to our next match against Brock on May 26th.
With the opening of Sunnybrook Park, all future practices will now be held there. With no scheduled game next weekend, training will be held at the Fox and Fiddle Leaside on Thursday evening. This means it is imperative that all players come to training at Sunnybrook Park on Tuesday. We had a great win on Saturday, and a very gutsy performance from the Buccs 2, so let’s keep the momentum going.
