BUCS RAISE BIG CASH FOR RETHINK BREAST CANCER

The Buccaneers’ Annual Charity event, known as Pink Ladies Day, was held June 20, and was a real success on and off the pitch. As per tradition, fund raising is held to raise money for ReThink Breast Cancer, and the Buccaneers players on the field sport pink socks to commemorate the day.

The Bucs RFC hosted the Etobicoke Invictus RFC, and also held an intersquad match between Bucs ‘Blue’ and Bucs ‘Black’ teams. The Bucs ‘Black’ squad, led by captain Nick Bright, edged Bucs ‘Blue’ 45-39 in a very entertaining affair. Bucs rookie Kalter Hali was man of the match for team ‘Black’ as the flanker scored a hat trick of tries. Lock Ben Birnie was man of the match for team ‘Blue’ with his great work rate around the park.

The Bucs first team, led by club captain Gideon Haasbroek, came out firing on all cylinders versus Etobicoke, running in a total of 7 tries in a great team effort for a 45-5 win. Bucs full back Aidan Smyth received man of the match honours.

Charitable fund raising went on all day during the matches thanks to Buccaneer club member Brent Dacey, and family, who set up and ran a food & beverage tent for the day. Big thanks to Brent, and his family of volunteers!

Post matches the Bucs rugby club continued to fund raise with raffles back at our sponsor bar, the Leaside Pub. Thanks to all the hard work of many volunteers, the Buccaneers raised nearly $1700 for breast cancer research!
